CHAPTER 14

“We’re close enough to the beach. Let’s walk down to the barbecue area,” I suggested as we finished lunch.

“You are sure?” Yelena nodded to my cane hanging from the back of the chair next to me.

“You’re nice enough to slow your pace for me. The exercise is good. A pixie girl needs to burn some calories.”

We paid our check and stopped by the host station on the way out. After complimenting Thad on the food, I tapped the stack of menus. “Any chance of opening a second location soon?”

“At your Faerock place?” Thad shrugged. “Maybe down the road. We’re still in our first month, and we’re getting a lot of traffic for being the new place in town. Let’s see what our customer base is like in a month.”

“Fair enough,” I said with a smile. “We have an open house coming up for the Faerock Building. Would you consider coming out with a sushi bar for that event? We want to have a taste of many of St. Mo’s restaurants.”

“Oh, most definitely,” Thad said. I left him my card and said I’d have Lexi call with the details.

Yelena and I headed across the street, and then to the stairs down to the beach. The concrete affair zigzagged down the bluff, with a steel railing painted in bright colors paralleling the steps. A beach runner trotted up the stairs. This was a popular spot for them to get in a stair climb. Up, then back down for some extra cardio, or whatever runners did. Yelena and I stayed single file.

“You get Aleks to set a date yet?”

Yelena chuckled from behind me. I led, setting the pace.

“Not yet. He has to coordinate with his grandfather. We prefer our wedding here, and that takes more work, coordinating our families to travel.”

“You want his grandfather to visit St. Mo?”

“Is that a problem?”

I couldn’t see her face, since the runner had turned around, and I heard him jogging down behind us. We stayed single file so he could pass. Once he was a landing below us, I glanced over my shoulder at her.

“Well, I mean, someone of his, um…”

“Business?” Yelena chuckled. “Yes, he needs permission from the Fae Ministry to travel here. We have to arrange all sorts of visas. And get permission from your American, umm… business heads.”

That was her way of saying the American mafia bosses had to approve his travel.

“But it’s your wedding. Aleks deserves to have his family here.”

“Yes, and the arrangements can be made.” Yelena stepped in next to me as we neared the beach level. “But the formalities take time.”

“How long?”

“We hope to wed this autumn. Before the election, if possible.” She touched my arm as we stepped onto the sandy beach. “I don’t have many friends here, Twizzle. Would you stand with me at the ceremony?”

“Um…” That took me by surprise. I expected an ask from Kami in a few years, if Roman popped the question. Yelena’s request blindsided me. We were building a good friendship, but we’d only known each other for a few months.
